But for $1800 I think it needs to happen. Only thing I'm worried about it getting them back to Denver from "Extreme Western Slope." Not to mention we just got about half a foot of snow here.

not a headache to work on at all. Love em. I had a 73 3.0s when I lived in Denver in fact, but I brought it back northeast with me. Just figure on a updated head swap to a later 5 series casting

And Colorado cars, no less. I expect there may be a wee bit o' rust.

Much want. I love pre-90's BMWs. Craigslist and eBay are my worst enemies.

just a little. They used to not use salt, just sand and gravel. Hell on windshields, not too bad on the bodies

From an e28? Do you have more info on this? I'm thinking this purchase needs to happen this weekend.

not a headeache at all, basic mechanical all the way sir. Though, parts for these are not as easy to find as they were even as little as 10 years back. They are extremely scarce now. They were hard to find before but now its very tough. Again, as far as working on them they are super basic trust me, nothing complicated at all. Basicus Maximus :]

I'm trying to enlist a few buddies to come with, I've emailed the seller for some more pictures specifically of the rust and frames.

I've emailed the seller for pictures of the rust, will follow up when I get a response.

I believe the head from an 85+ 535 is a direct fit. The cooling on the E3/12 was undersized, and once you overheat it once in traffic, the head cracks. I have had one of each in the 3.0l size and both had this problem. Fixed permanently with the later head. Might be a little different with the 2.8 in the Bav, but as far as I knew it was all interchangeable. Great cars. If you go down this route I still am in touch with my BMWCCA people out there who helped me out alot.
http://www.seniorsix.org/index.html here is a treasure trove of info on the E3

and to add on to this http://www.firstfives.org/parts.html is a parts interchange for the e12, alot is similar to the e3 here too

I'm a denverite, the western slope can be a fair haul, planning on trailering them back or pushing your luck with driving them back?

If you go through Buena Vista and Gunnison, it isn't that bad. I've made the trip at least 15 frickin times, 'cause I have family in Montrose. Not only that, if you have he chance, with you should take you vintage Bimmer and go tool around in Telluride.

My roommate has an SUV I can use so I can probably trailer 1 back and drive the other? I don't know this weather is pretty serious through this weekend. I also asked the seller where he was located exactly and what kind of running condition they are in.

There's very, very little rust here. Mag chloride here in the winter, no salt, and little moisture year round. The CO vehicles I've had that have been older have been a joy to work on. No rusted fasteners, little bodywork needed (other than paint). I'm always shocked when I had back east to visit family and see the rusted out hunks driving around.

There are very few BMWs that I would actually go out of my way to buy. I think the 3.0 Bavaria is one of them. Gorgeous cars :)
